Proofreading vs. Copy Editing

What’s the difference between proofreading and copy editing?

Proofreading should be the last step in preparation of a document that has already been edited and formatted. A proofreader checks for any remaining errors and inconsistencies in use of grammar, punctuation, and spelling. A proofreader never changes the content of a piece and doesn’t make editorial decisions, but she ensures that whatever is written conforms to the style guide used by the author or authors.

Copy editing should always precede proofreading in order to ensure clean, decisive writing. It addresses things like syntax (the arrangement of words and phrases to create well-formed sentences), usage, redundancies, and consistency of voice and style; and it checks for errors in grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Copy editing does not, however, make changes in content, nor does it always ensure that the document is logical, factually complete, or accurate.

Maybe you don't know what you need — proofreading or copy editing or both. Just call me or attach a sample of your project to an email and send it to me. We'll figure it out. That's what I'm here for! :)
